Get to know about International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)

International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)

Olympiads are held on a national and international scale, and they encourage students from related academic disciplines or levels to compete. Olympiads are widely regarded as one of the most difficult exams to pass, whether on a national or international scale. The coveted tests aid in the development of a competitive mindset while also allowing students to compare their knowledge and awareness of a subject topic to that of their competitors.

Participation in Olympiad Exams will assist them in improving their academic performance as well as comparing their knowledge level and exam readiness to that of other students across the country. We’ve ensured that each member is motivated to succeed in their chosen fields and academics. In this article, we will go over the Olympiad exams in greater detail.

What is the IMO Exam

The IMO exam is a Mathematics competition organised by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) for students in grades 1 to 12 to observe and support future scientists, technologists, and IT talents at the school level. International Mathematics Olympiad Exams is the full name of the IMO exam. The IMO exam paper is held annually to identify and encourage students’ mathematical abilities both in India and abroad.

It exposes students to opportunities on both the national and international levels. Students who took the IMO exam are ranked based on their performance on the IMO exam paper level 1. After passing the level 1 exam, students can move on to the level 2 exam.

IMO 2022 Eligibility Criteria

Students in grades 1–12 who want to assess their academic level in mathematics are eligible to apply for IMO. All participants first take the Level 1 exam, which qualifies them for the Level 2 exam.

For IMO Level 1 Eligibility: Students in grades 1–12 can apply for the Level 1 exam regardless of their academic performance. The eligibility criterion aids in increasing the number of students who participate. Students in grades 1 to 12 who are pursuing an education in the country or abroad are eligible to take the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) Level 1 exam.

IMO Level 2 Eligibility: Only students who performed well in the Level 1 exam are considered for the Level 2 exam. The top 5% of students in each class will be eligible for the Level 2 exam. The top 25 zone and category rank holders will also be eligible. Class toppers from each participating school must enrol at least ten students from each class in the exam and achieve 50% qualifying marks.

In the event of section-by-section registration, the top rank holder will be eligible for Level 2. It should be noted, however, that Class 1 and 2 students are exempt from taking the Level 2 exam. They evaluate the student’s performance solely on the Level 1 exam.

IMO 2022 Admit Card

The admit card for IMO will be issued by the conducting authority once the registration process is completed. The IMO hall ticket will be available in PDF format online.

  • The SOF IMO admit card for level I exams can be obtained from the school authorities.
  • The admit card for the level II exams will be made available one week before the exam. As a result, students can obtain it by going to the SOF’s official website.
  • On the day of the exam, participants must have their admit cards with them.
  • Candidates will not be permitted to enter the examination hall unless they have a valid hall ticket.

IMO 2022 Exam Pattern

There are two levels of competition in the International Mathematical Olympiad. Candidates must be qualified at the School, State/Zonal, and International levels. Before taking the exam, applicants should review the IMO exam pattern.

The following are the exam pattern specifics:

Level 1

  • The first level of the test is organized in the respective schools of the participants during school hours.
  • The level 1 competition is a test of 60 minutes duration comprising 35 objective-type (Multiple Choice) questions for class 1 to class 4 and 50 objective-type (Multiple Choice) questions for class 5 to class 12.
  • Mode of Exam: Offline
  • Type of Questions: Objective
  • Medium of Test: English
  • Syllabus of the Test: CBSE, ICSE/ISC, and State Board syllabi are followed for setting the test papers.

Level 2

  • Level 2 is conducted for students of class 3 to class 12.
  • IMO exam 2022-22 consists of four sections- Logical Reasoning, Mathematical Reasoning, Everyday Mathematics, and Achievers Section.\
  • Mode of Exam: Offline
  • Type of Questions: Objective
  • Medium of Test: English
  • Syllabus of the Test: CBSE, ICSE/ISC, and State Board syllabi are followed for setting the test papers.

The benefit of participating in the IMO 2022 Olympiad

Participants in these IMO Olympiads are ranked based on their scores. Following the first level of the test, students can judge themselves at four different levels: within the school, city, zonal, and international.

Every student would receive a Student Performance Report (SPR). The SPR identifies a student’s strong and weak performances and provides a detailed performance comparison of the student to other students at the School, City, Zonal, and International levels. This analysis will also include a review of the students’ previous ten years of performance.

IMO 2022-23 Exam Date

The SOF specifies a range of dates for administering the IMO exam. Schools may choose any date for the Olympiad exams to be held in their schools. Date changes, on the other hand, are not permitted. For the exams scheduled on different dates, separate questions will be asked. Schools should send registration forms to the SOF at least 30 days before the IMO exam date.

IMO is divided into two levels: Level 1 and Level 2. Level 2 exams are usually held within two months of the completion of Level 1 exams. Because the SOF has not yet announced the IMO exam dates for 2022-23, we have provided a preliminary timeline of the IMO exam dates, Level 1 and 2, based on the previous year’s dates.

IMO Exam 2022-23 Dates
Enrollment Date (Level 1) 2nd week of October onwards
Level 1 Exam 3rd week of January
Level 2 Exam 1st week of March

IMO 2022 Selection Process

Candidates who pass the school and district/state level exams are chosen to compete in the International Mathematical Olympiad. This section goes over the specifics of the IMO selection process. The following people would qualify for the second round (at the state/zone level):

  • At International Level: Top 5% of candidates, class-wise, who appear in the 1st level exam internationally.
  • At Zone/State Level: Top 25 rank holders from each Zone and each class.
  • At School Level: Class topper where at least 10 students from a class appear in the exam & scores at least 50% qualifying marks.

IMO 2022 Results (Level 1 & 2)

The Olympiad results are usually announced eight weeks after the examination. Because the SOF sends the results directly to the registered schools, students can pick up their products at their respective schools. Students can also check their results on the SOF’s official website. The precise dates for the IMO result declaration are at the sole discretion of SOF. However, for Level 1, results are usually announced tentatively by December – January, and for Level 2, by March – April.
